Sabbath Day

The First Presidency and the quorum of the twelve set up a specific training on the Sabbath Day. Being the Primary President I had the opportunity to attend a training from our Stake in our Ward Council. It was awesome! So we, as a ward council, decided in October we would dedicate one Sunday to talk about the Sabbath Day. All talks and lessons in Sacrament Meeting, Sunday School, Primary, Relief Society, Young Mens and Young Womens would be some aspect of the Sabbath Day. I was so pumped up to teach the kids. I wanted to focus on making the Sabbath Day a Delight for the kids. I wanted to focus on all the wonderful things about the Sabbath.

I first talked about the meaning of Sabbath. Then I talked quickly about the creation and what the Lord did on the seventh day and what he expects us to do. Then the ten commandments Exodus 20:8. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/ex/20?lang=eng That it must be pretty important to be included in the 10 commandments.

Then I went into the senses of Sunday from this talk. https://www.lds.org/blog/theres-really-no-such-thing-as-a-sabbath-cannot?lang=eng I let them tell me what they felt with each sense. I also quoted part of the above talk about how he spent his Sundays as a youth and how it made him feel and later as an adult how he spent his Sundays and how it felt.

I retold the story of Meg, taken from the following article. https://www.lds.org/friend/2010/11/a-day-to-decide?lang=eng During the part where she goes to ask her Dad if she can go to the park with her friend. I would stop and ask the children what they thought the Dad would say. Of course they all said, “NO!” Each time I would tear up as I told the children that the Dad gave Meg the opportunity to choose for herself. I felt the spirit so strong during this part, as I thought about how much Heavenly Father loves us and gives us the opportunity to make our own choices. I then handed out the Sabbath Cans that I had made for each child. They were so excited.

I then went into the Manna story from this article. https://www.lds.org/friend/2004/11/remember-the-sabbath-day?lang=eng I enlarged the pictures from this article and had the kids come up one at a time and tell something we Can do on the Sabbath and put a manna in the basket. They could come up with their own idea or use one from the can I had given them.

Making the cans was a lot of work. (Not sure I would do it again) But I wanted it to be a lesson for them to remember. I wanted to focus on the Good things of the Sabbath, and that it was a gift from Heavenly Father and could be a delightful day. The kids were over the moon about taking home the cans. I felt it was so important because the First Presidency thought it was of highest priority that they did a special training on it.

Making the cans: We collected empty cans from ward members. Then during a presidency meeting, we assembled the cans. We first put a pretty duct tape on the lip of the can so they would not hurt anyone. Then, I had printed the labels for the cans (2 per sheet) and my presidency hot glued them on. In each can I put about 24 sticks. In Sr. they had 10 blank (to write their own ideas) ones and 14 preprinted. In Jr. they had 4 blank and 20 preprinted. I cut out the labels on my silhouette and glued them onto craft sticks. I made each class a different color and the sticks correlated to that. If doing it again, I would definitely simplify that.
